On the last day of the world, I want to be on a Boat!!!

Today is August 24th- HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODD!!!

Let's start with where I left off... Thursday, August 20th:
We left Mystic headed for Port Jefferson, NY. All day long, all we could see was fog. We could only see the water surrounding the boat.
For over 5 hours. That was our scenery. This far north, it doesn’t get warm enough quickly enough for the fog to dissipate like it does at home. What a pain in the butt. But! It was a “teachable moment”- navigating in the fog is a whole different ballgame, or really, the same ballgame, just requires more focus. When you’re in the fog, you as a power-driven vessel blast your horn at least every 2 minutes. Which we did. Then, with the help of radar, you have to locate and steer clear of any other vessel blowing their horn. Which we also did. Then there’s the whole searching for buoys in the fog, which I found somewhat humorous. (I’m not very good at it.)
We got into Port Jefferson around 1ish- had lunch, washed down the boat, then I went in search of tomatoes and diet coke (to be enjoyed separately). I found neither. However, I did find a Starbucks and a Gap! It wasn’t a wasted afternoon… after everybody got cleaned up, we went down the street to a place called Village Way for dinner.

Friday, August 21st:
to Liberty Landing in Jersey City (where we stayed a couple weeks ago, across from Manhattan?)
We stayed there until this morning.
On the way in, we got some really great pictures, just from the opposite direction as the ones we took a few weeks ago...

There really just isn't a whole lot of room in NYC. This road goes under the hospital, and it's like that bridge from before- cars on top and on the bottom!...so weird...

Saturday, August 22nd:
We went to Times Square!!! Check it out!

On Sunday, we went to the Central Park Zoo!

Today was a big day- we took a cab to Tavern on the Green in Central Park- holy cannoli! What a cool place! They have gorgeous stained glass light fixtures all the way down the hallway- just like this one:
Then, the whole dining room has HUGE chandeliers all over- like this one:
Our lunch was PHENOMENAL! Then came dessert. Luckily for me, Dick didn’t want much of his, so here is me. And my chocolate cake. And my cheesecake. Yum-oh.

After lunch, we walked around Central Park for a little while- I had no idea it was so big! There were tons of people! It was really pretty.

Then, we got another cab to take us down 5th Avenue to the Empire State Building. 5th Avenue is fun- lots of people to watch.


The Empire State Building was interesting- LOTS of lines to walk through to get to the top, 2 very cramped elevators, but TOTALLY worth the wait. The view from the top was awesome awesome.

From there, we took a cab (with a fun cabbie- we sang Taylor Swift and UB40) back to PJ Clark’s. We liked it so much yesterday, we had to go back! Tomorrow we’re headed to Flushing. Only a 2ish hour ride up the Hudson. We’re leaving at 8AM!!!

We’re in New York City! …well, kinda… we’re staying in Jersey City. So, we can see New York City from where we’re staying. Today was a GREAT DAY!!!

We got to see a little tug helping a big tanker re-fuel an even bigger work vessel- VERY cool!

Then we went under the Verrazano Bridge:
Behind it is Brooklyn. It’s a double bridge! Cars on top AND on the bottom!


Just past the bridge is Fort Wadsworth, and consequently, Fort Wadsworth Light (that little white point on top):


We saw the Statue of Liberty!!! Here she is!!!



Right after we saw her, we saw this building:Apparently, there’s research going on in this facility by the UN to find out whether or not large populations affect the global climate change. I’m on the edge of my seat, as I’m sure you are.

Here’s Manhattan from the Hudson:

Docking was an adventure today. If Risky Business is 18.5 ft wide (which it is), our slip is approximately 19.3 ft wide. Seriously.

Cool news: we are docked 3 boats down from a boat named Quisisana. They were in Charleston with us! Check out the picture! Their name changes color- way cool.

We took a ferry over to NYC:On the way, we saw the “famous” Colgate Clock.Have you all heard of it? yeah, me neither.

Then, we walked to the WTC site and saw them working on it and we toured the September 11th Museum. Very interesting.

I know you can’t read this, but it’s a memorial to all who lost their lives that day- on the planes, in the towers, in Philadelphia… everybody.

We passed this pretty church- Trinity:

We passed the Holland Tunnel- it gets cars to NJ. How cool is this- they have big fans at the entrance that suck out all the exhaust- I learned something new!

From there, we walked to Battery Park. And I found these flowers for Momma! Garbage flowers! :D

After that, we stopped for a respite at a place called PJ Clark’s overlooking the Hudson- so pretty! Here we are!

Then we ate at a really great restaurant right next to the marina- mmmmm! scallops!

Tomorrow, we're excited for another day in New York City!
